The benefits

What a colonic can do for you.

Colonic hydrotherapy — also called colonic irrigation or colon cleansing — is a gentle wellness treatment that supports the digestive system using warm, filtered water. It's not a replacement for medical care, but many clients find it a genuinely transformative part of their routine.

Digestion & bloating

Support relief from constipation, bloating and IBS-type symptoms by clearing built-up waste and stimulating natural peristalsis.

Detoxification

Flush accumulated toxins and stagnant waste from the length of the large intestine — a deeper reach than an enema.

Energy & clarity

Many clients report improved energy, better concentration and lighter mornings after a course of treatments.

Skin, hair & nails

A well-functioning colon supports clearer skin, healthier hair and better nutrient absorption from your food.

Weight management

Combined with lifestyle advice tailored to you, hydrotherapy can be a gentle support to a weight-management plan.

Immune support

Around 70% of your immune system lives in your gut. A healthier colon is a healthier foundation for the whole body.

What to expect

A calm, dignified 75 minutes.

Nervous about your first colonic? Almost everyone is. The reality is quieter, calmer and more dignified than most people imagine — and it's over before you know it.

  1. 01

    Consultation

We start with a thorough, unhurried consultation — medical history, current concerns, what you'd like from the session. You'll be shown the equipment and every step is explained before we begin.

  2. 02

    The treatment

You'll change privately and lie comfortably. A very small sterile speculum is gently inserted, and warm filtered water flows into the colon under carefully controlled temperature and pressure.

  3. 03

    Gentle release

The colon fills and releases in a natural rhythm through a closed system — no mess, no odour. Your therapist massages your abdomen to help the process, repeating cycles over 40–60 minutes.

  4. 04

    Aftercare

Time to freshen up in private and receive personalised advice on diet, hydration and lifestyle to help you get the most from your treatment.

Frequently asked

Your questions, answered.

Still unsure? Call the clinic on 01904 501 500 — we're always happy to have an unhurried chat before you book.

Is colonic hydrotherapy safe?+

Yes. We use FDA-approved, CE-certified closed-system equipment with single-use, disposable consumables. Water temperature and pressure are carefully controlled throughout by your therapist, and every session begins with a full health consultation to check for contraindications.

What's the difference between colonic hydrotherapy and a colon cleanse?+

A colon cleanse usually means an at-home product such as a detox tea, laxative or enema kit. Colonic hydrotherapy is a professional treatment using warm, filtered water to gently irrigate the whole colon under trained supervision. Both have different risks, costs and results.

How much does colonic hydrotherapy cost in York?+

Your introductory 75-minute session at Redmayne Lodge is £80 (usually £90). This includes a full consultation, the treatment itself and aftercare advice.

How long does a session take?+

Allow around 75 minutes for your first appointment. Consultation takes about 15–20 minutes, the treatment itself lasts 40–60 minutes, followed by time to freshen up.

How long does the actual colonic irrigation treatment last?+

The active treatment phase usually lasts 40–60 minutes. During this time warm filtered water gently fills and releases from the colon in a natural rhythm, with abdominal massage to support the process.

Is it embarrassing or uncomfortable?+

The closed-system means there is no mess and no odour, and your dignity is preserved at all times. Most clients describe the sensation as gentle pressure and warmth rather than discomfort — many find it deeply relaxing.

What happens during a colonic hydrotherapy session?+

After a consultation, you'll change privately and lie comfortably on the treatment bed. A small sterile speculum is gently inserted, and warm filtered water flows into the colon under controlled pressure. The colon fills and releases naturally through the closed tube while your therapist uses gentle abdominal massage. There is no mess or odour, and you remain covered throughout.

Do I need to prepare beforehand?+

Eat lightly on the day of your treatment, avoid heavy or gassy foods, and drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after your session.

What should I eat before a colonic?+

Stick to light, easy-to-digest foods such as soups, salads, fish, rice or steamed vegetables. Avoid heavy, fried, spicy or gassy foods like beans, cabbage, onions and carbonated drinks for 24 hours before your appointment.

Should I fast before colonic hydrotherapy?+

You do not need to fast. In fact, a completely empty stomach can make some people feel lightheaded. A light meal 2–3 hours before your session is ideal.

Can I drink coffee or alcohol before a colonic?+

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your treatment. It's best to limit caffeine on the day too, as it can stimulate the bowel and make you feel jittery. Water and herbal teas are the best choices.

What should I wear to a colonic appointment?+

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You will change privately and remain covered with a towel or gown during the treatment, so your outfit only needs to be easy to change in and out of.

Will I be able to go back to work after a colonic?+

Most clients feel fine and carry on with their day. Some prefer to take things gently for an hour or two. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, alcohol and heavy meals for the rest of the day.

Are there any side effects after colonic hydrotherapy?+

Side effects are usually mild and short-lived. Some people feel wonderfully light and energised; others may experience slight tiredness, mild cramping or increased bowel activity for a few hours. These typically settle quickly. Drinking water and eating lightly help.

Is it normal to feel bloated after a colonic?+

A little bloating or gurgling can occur as the bowel rebalances, but it usually passes within a few hours. Walking gently and sipping warm water can help.

Who shouldn't have colonic hydrotherapy?+

Colonic hydrotherapy is not suitable during pregnancy, or if you have certain conditions including active Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis flare-ups, diverticulitis, recent bowel surgery, or severe cardiac conditions. All contraindications are discussed at your consultation. Minimum age 18.

Can I have a colonic if I have IBS?+

Many people with IBS find colonic hydrotherapy helpful for bloating and constipation, but it depends on your individual symptoms and medical history. We review this during your consultation and will advise if it's appropriate for you.

Is colonic hydrotherapy safe during menstruation?+

Yes, it is generally safe during menstruation. Some women actually find it helps with bloating. Just let your therapist know so we can make you as comfortable as possible.

Can I have a colonic after surgery?+

If you have had recent bowel, abdominal or rectal surgery, you will usually need to wait until you are fully healed and have clearance from your GP or consultant. We discuss your surgical history during the consultation.
